I’m really excited about whether Recyke y Bike could play a role in encouraging people who live in or near the way to be able to cycle, particularly those who don’t fix the normal cycling demographic: currently we refurbish used bikes & sell at low cost or donate to those in need, provide bike maintenance training, and are very eager to enable local people to have access to cycling. it would be fantastic if we can play any role in the ouseburn way project.
This is such a brilliant idea, I love walking through Jesmond Dene. Two things would help me – better signs so those that don’t know the area can find their way. And better accessibility. I find the paths slippy so don’t like going on my own, maybe a handrail might be possible on steep sections? I’d also love parts of the route that could be navigated with a wheelchair or mobility scooter to be signed and marked on a map. Opportunities to include dropped kerbs where possible and relevant would be great too. Thank you.
The worst thing about the Ouseburn area at the moment is that pedestrian and cycle access to it from Byker and Heaton is awful: it’s unpleasant, inconvenient and dangerous. Can’t do much about the presence of the A193 but more could be done to slow traffic across the Byker Bridge and provide better pedestrian and cycle crossings over it.
The pollution in the Ouseburn needs to be dealt with urgently. I have walked along the Ouseburn for many years and I am very distressed by the decline in water quality. I am very excited by this project. Thank you for having such an inspiring vision.
The most important thing for me is for new wildlife habitat to be created.
Sounds like a wonderful idea/vision
Safe walking routes with dogs on lead please.

Our in-depth brochure outlines all of our proposed plans and aims to:

  • Define the potential of the Ouse Burn and the Letch as a major recreational resource of benefit to the residents of Tyne and Wear
  • Seek the support of all those bodies with an interest in the area to agree a comprehensive strategy that meets local and national objectives and secures the long term development and maintenance of the corridor
